If you are using a manual backup once in a while, then it good. I am suggesting to have a cloud backup just in case we loose the local backup that we have with us.
Having a backup is crucial. Use a plugin to backup to a free cloud service like dropbox so that your data remains safe.
I think its easier to copy all the files and database. First create the backup of the files and mysql database. then upload the files to the new server, create the database, import the data from the backup, then update the configuration files – /inc/config.php and /inc/settings.php
I am finding myself using the smartphone more often to access the web. Doing almost 75% of the stuff through the phone nowadays.
I had to set everything up as fast as I can. I know that bbress may not be the best forum plugin for wordpress, but its been there for ages and its not likely for Automattic to stop its support.
I had initially thought of using wpForo or Asgaros Forum plugin. And as I told earlier, I am not sure how well these will last further into the future.
Glad to see that your site is up and running. I am checking out plugins which can enhance the bbpress plugin so that we could get more features out pf this forum.

Try uploading files and folders via ftp – don’t upload the entire zip folder.
